Guest posts or link insertions: choosing the right format

Understand how new articles and contextual additions differ, and what to agree before either placement.

Two formats, one relevance test

Guest posting creates a new article on a publisher’s site. A link insertion adds an agreed reference to an existing article. In both cases, the connection between the article and the target page should be useful to the reader.

When a new article is useful

A new article can work when the topic needs an explanation that does not already exist on the publication. It gives room to plan a clear argument, answer relevant questions and develop an editorial context around the subject. The topic still needs to fit the publisher’s audience.

When existing content is a good fit

An existing article may already discuss a subject your page helps explain. Review the whole article and the intended paragraph. A suitable addition should improve the content rather than force an unrelated reference into it. Publisher permission and editorial review are essential.

Compare the work involved

For a guest article, agree who will research, write and approve the content. For an insertion, agree which existing URL will be edited, the surrounding wording and the destination. Ask what happens if the publisher changes the proposed approach during review.

Set expectations about publication

Confirm the scope, review process and delivery evidence for each placement. Neither format creates a guarantee of rankings or traffic. Timing depends on publisher availability, approval and the work required.

Keep disclosure in the brief

Where a placement is paid or sponsored, discuss the appropriate disclosure and link attributes. Commercial relationships should be represented accurately. Do not assume that a publisher’s willingness to add a link removes its responsibility to label commercial content.

Choose the context before the format

Start with the reader and the usefulness of the linked page. If no suitable article exists, a well-planned new piece may be worth considering. If a relevant article can be improved with a helpful reference, ask whether a contextual addition is available.

Your practical checklist

  • A specific new topic or existing article has been identified.
  • The destination adds useful context.
  • Writing and approval responsibilities are agreed.
  • Commercial disclosure and link attributes are confirmed.
  • Final delivery includes the published URL.
