How to choose a relevant publisher for your next campaign

Two editorial page layouts with a purple and lime palette

A practical checklist for assessing audience, editorial context and site information before choosing a placement.

Start with the page you want readers to visit

A publisher shortlist is easier to assess when the destination is clear. Write down what your target page offers, who it helps and the questions it answers. A product page, a detailed guide and a research report need different editorial contexts.

Review audience and geography together

A country-code domain is only one signal. Read recent articles, review the publication’s stated audience and consider the language of the content. If you need a US audience, ask what evidence is available about readership rather than assuming that an English-language site primarily reaches the United States.

Read the publication before reading the metrics

Look at the quality, consistency and relevance of recent material. Is the publication coherent about its subject matter? Does it provide useful information for the intended reader? Do links in existing articles have a clear purpose? A high third-party score cannot answer those questions on its own.

Ask when and how metrics were checked

Third-party metrics are estimates. Record the source, date and relevant country or database for any traffic information. A missing value is an information gap; it should not be replaced with an invented number. Compare like with like and look for context when values change.

Agree the editorial requirements

Confirm whether the opportunity is a new guest article or a contextual addition to an existing article. Discuss content length, topic, target page, editorial approval, commercial disclosure, link attributes and any restrictions before ordering. Paid placements should be handled transparently and in line with applicable publisher and search-engine requirements.

Keep a short decision record

A useful shortlist records the audience fit, article idea, destination, language, available data and questions still to resolve. That record makes it easier for a client or colleague to understand why a publisher was selected.

A final check before selection

Read the target page and proposed context together. The connection should make sense to a human reader. No placement or metric guarantees search rankings, traffic or a particular commercial outcome.

Your practical checklist

  • Target page and intended reader are defined.
  • Country and language requirements are recorded.
  • Publication and article context have been reviewed.
  • Metrics include a source and check date where available.
  • Editorial terms, disclosure and link attributes are understood.
