A better brief for an international link-building campaign

A central node connecting six editorial opportunities

Define countries, languages, target pages and campaign scope before researching international publishers.

Define the audience before the region

“Europe” covers multiple countries, languages and editorial environments. A useful brief names the search audiences you need to reach and ranks markets by priority. Germany, France and the Netherlands should not be treated as interchangeable selections.

Separate country from language

An English-language site can have a global audience. A German-language publication may reach readers in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Tell your outreach partner which country and language combinations matter to the campaign, and which are optional.

Match destination pages to the brief

List the exact target URLs and explain the purpose of each. If you have localised pages, identify the correct version for each market. Make sure the page is available, useful and consistent with the language expectations of the reader.

Specify the niche in ordinary language

Describe your products, services and intended customers without relying only on broad category labels. A technology publication covering consumer devices may be a poor match for an enterprise infrastructure product. Concrete topic examples help researchers distinguish useful opportunities.

Agree a scope that can be reviewed

Provide a working placement quantity, budget range and preferred format. State whether you need guest posts, link insertions, research only or a custom campaign. Availability may change, so identify which constraints are essential and which can be discussed.

Decide who approves what

Assign a contact for site selection, article topics, content drafts and final placement questions. A clear approval process prevents a publisher shortlist from advancing before the relevant people have reviewed it.

Document the outcome without overclaiming

Keep a record of the final URLs, countries, languages, placement types and agreed terms. Assess search performance within the wider context of your site and marketing activity. A backlink campaign alone cannot guarantee a specific result.

Your practical checklist

  • Countries are prioritised individually.
  • Required content languages are specified.
  • Exact target URLs and page purposes are listed.
  • Niche examples and exclusions are clear.
  • Scope, budget and approval contacts are defined.
